Now, then for normal aggregates you would use a having to further filter those aggregated rows ... but having is not allowed in update. And in effect Sybase syntax with aggregates is to then apply this partial result to each and ever row of the table to be updated. If you want to apply some restricted aggregate (or indeed any aggregate) so a subset of the rows of a table being updated then either 1) use a subquery or 2) break the update into two steps.
