Workaround Description  What is written up in the ASE alter table documentation: After replicating an alter table to modify an encrypted column, an update or delete may fail to qualify any rows at the replicate site. This can happen when * The replication "key" (defined in the RepDef) includes a column encrypted by an encryption key using an initialization vector or random pad * Alternatively, there is no replication key but at least one column in the table is encrypted by an EK using an IV or random pad AND * An alter table statement has altered an encrypted column -- either a column that appears in the replication key or, if there is no replication key, in the rest of the table The problem behind the failure is the use of an initialization vector or random pad with encryption. The purpose of an IV or random padding of data is to randomize the ciphertext such that two like values encrypted by the same key result in two differing ciphertext strings If the ciphertext for encrypted data at the source and replicate sites differs then any attempt by Replication Server to match the before-image from the source site with data at the target site will fail. If no IV and no random padding is used, the ciphertext at the source and target will match exactly. The matching is required because Replication Server issues a WHERE clause on UPDATE/DELETE statements using the ciphertext of encrypted columns. The solution is to to use one of the following strategies if replicating DDL. * For encrypted columns used in a replication key, make sure that the column's encryption key specifies INIT_VECTOR NULL and PAD NULL. * If no replication key is defined, make sure all encrypted columns in the table are encrypted by keys defined with INIT_VECTOR NULL and PAD NULL. * If data has diverged between source and replicate sites because of previous encryption using initialization vectors or random padding, manually sync up data to avoid failures of UPDATE and DELETE statements.
